Increasing the buzz of a juicy hookah bowl is a lost art among hookah smokers. Even if you are a consistent hookah smoker and you feel like there is no chance of ever achieving that buzzy, light-headed state you experienced when you sat down for your first hookah session that blew your mind - you may be wrong about that. Well, if that sounds like you, stick around! You might learn a trick or two here that will help you increase your hookah buzz, thus renewing your love for hookah you felt as an enthusiastic new smoker.
A lot of these tips depend on your tolerance level for nicotine, so if none of them work for you, take a break from your hookah! You might just need to let your body get rid of some of the nicotine in your system to be able to achieve that buzz you're looking for. A 2-3 day hiadus from your hookah should be plenty to have you floating amongst the clouds.
Smoke Tobacco with High Nicotine Content
If it is a buzz you crave, then it is probably nicotine you need to achieve your goal. Since nicotine is the main contributing factor to achieving a buzzed state, we recommend using tobacco that is higher in nicotine than what you are used to smoking on, first and foremost. There are several brands that are higher in nicotine content than some of the more flavor-oriented brands like Starbuzz or Fantasia. It's important to keep in mind, when selecting your brand, that each brand comes with a few different lines, some of which contain zero nicotine and some of the more extreme lines can even contain caffeine. Some notable high-nicotine brands include Haze, Nirvana, Al Fakher, Nakhla and Tangiers. Tangiers and Nakhla are known as 'unwashed' shisha, which basically means these brands are much higher in nicotine content than your typical shisha tobacco.
With brands like Tangiers and Nakhla, the tobacco will burn for quite a while - we've seen some sessions last up to 2 hours - and the nicotine is evenly distributed throughout the tobacco leaves to make for a consistently buzzy hookah bowl for your smoke session. This means every puff you take should theoretically be just as high in nicotine content as the last, and the flavor is going to last for the entire session as well - the perfect combo.
Nirvana is known as "super shisha" for the high amounts of nicotine in the tobacco. The way Nirvana lives up to its nickname of being the super shisha is that they have blended dokha tobacco into their shisha mix, which is incredibly high in nicotine content. Dokha is infused into the blend, however, since dokha tobacco is very dry and cut very finely, it tends to burn out before the rest of the hookah bowl. with the final result being an intensely buzzy bowl for about 20 minutes, with a smooth and delicious cool down to take the rest of the bowl to the finish line.
Packing Method & Heat Management
Welcome to the most important part of your buzz enhancement. First off, for increasing your bowl's buzz-ability, the recommended bowl to use would be any kind of good phunnel bowl. Among the phunnel bowls, you can't go wrong with the Harmony Hookah Bowl or something like the OG Rook Hookah Bowl. The reason phunnel bowls are recommended is because you can overpack your bowl and not have to worry about losing any excess juices. Vortex bowls can serve the same purpose, but they are not quite as optimal for overpacking. When packing your bowl, first try using more tobacco than you would typically pack in a bowl. The key to a good dense pack is to not
overpack the overpack! If you do so, you'll notice that the hookah is nearly impossible to draw from because any airflow channels will be blocked. What you want to do to mitigate this problem, is to use a foil poker or a shisha fork
You may have noticed at this point that our recommended setup does not include the Kaloud Lotus Heat Management System, but you can follow these same steps using the Kaloud Lotus and yield the same results. Since you'll be presumably be using an extra coal, we recommend removing the lid of the Lotus so you don't have so much concentrated heat in one spot, which can potentially shock the tobacco. (toothpicks work great as well) to break up the shisha that is too tightly packed, opening up air pockets through which your heat can flow.
Once you have your bowl packed and ready to go, and your foil is applied with plenty of holes, it's time to add coals. Since you are A) using more shisha tobacco that normal and B) since this tobacco is more heat-resistant, we recommend dropping a fourth coal on your bowl for added heat. Doing so should effectively increase your smoke output dramatically, and in doing so, you get more nicotine for that added buzz - two birds with one stone!
